Don't judge me but...I HATE MY HAIR!
My natural hair has taken me on a roller coaster for the past 4 years. We have a love-hate relationship. I have experienced heat damage, excessive shedding, a texture change and breakage.
I began this journey on February 10, 2010. There was no particular event that sparked this transition but I decided to stop getting relaxers as I constantly wore sew-ins. A year passed and I was 5 inches into my journey. On May 5, 2011, I decided to try a texturizer. I was merely exploring the effect this would have on my hair. I absolutely loved it! My hair was flourishing as the texture was soft and manageable. But then the unthinkable happened. February of 2012, I decided to take a 2 month break from wearing sew-ins. Within the first month, my hair began to shed excessively and break off.
I was devastated. I had/still have no idea why my hair fell out. And it fell out for 6 months! The only changes I made in my hair regime was the decision to switch to a "natural" product, Shea Moisture's Moisture Retention Shampoo and Restorative Conditioner. Shortly after the initial use of this product, my hair was shedding and breaking. I returned to shampoos and conditioners with silicones and parabens (all of the stuff naturalists preach about avoiding). As this was occurring, my texture was changing. I also cut off the texturized strands. Since then, I have paid more attention to my hair, its likes and dislikes. I wear weaves all of the time for 8 weeks at a time. When I uninstall my weaves, I leave my hair out for a week and then reinstall. During that week, I deep condition, treat it with hot oil, and apply a protein treatment if I feel like I need it. My hair has since recovered in length but the density has not been the same. My texture now is now a little kinky and less curly than before.
I am currently taking The Mane Choice Manetabolism Healthy Hair Vitamin. I have taken it for 4 months over a 6 month period. I can not say that I have seen major changes in my hair but it has grown longer. I will continue to take these vitamins for the duration of the 2014. I am also currently using all DevaCurl products on my hair. The only other product I will use on my natural hair is Curly Kids Mixed Hair Curly Creme Conditioner when I do a twist out to blend my hair with my curly weave.
It is important to love your hair to successfully conquer this quest to long and healthy natural hair! I am learning to love my hair but it is a work in progress.
