"Yours Truly"

Artist of the Week

Ariana Grande

Some of you all may know this artist as the sweet and gullible character 'Cat' from Nickelodeon's "Victorious" and "Sam and Cat." Ariana has officially crossed over into the music industry with the release of her album, Yours Truly. This beauty burst onto the scene with outstanding vocals with ranges that are comparable to those of the great Mariah Carey. Of course, Mariah herself and her posse of "lambs" have thrown shade at Grande for these comparisons but Grande remained humble and handled these situations with poise. Ariana is not trying to "imitate" Mariah because she is too busy making a name for herself.

The singer, songwriter, and actress released her first album September 3, 2013. Debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard Charts, Yours Truly was atop of the list, beating out Tamar Braxton's Love & War. With this album, Grande was the first female since 2010 with her first album to debut at number 1. So far, Ariana has been nominated for 3 Radio Disney Music Awards, 8 World Music Awards, 1 MTV Europe Music Award, 1 American Music Award, 3 Teen Choice Awards, and 1 Music Choice award--some of which she won and some are still pending. Grande is a force to be reckoned with and her success can only continue to flourish.

I truly love her album. Since its debut, I have listened to it probably over 1,001 times. I believe it's one of the best R&B/Pop albums I've purchased since Keri Hilson's No Boys Allowed (keep in mind I said that I have purchased). It details slow-building club bangers, uptempo pop tracks, '50s sampled love stories, and mesmerizing ballads, as she takes you on an emotional roller coaster through romance and heartbreak. She showcases her versatile talents without conforming to the "norm." My favorite tracks are "Honeymoon Avenue," "Right There," "Almost is Never Enough," and "Tattooed Heart." Mark my words and remember her name. She will be the one to supersede Mariah Carey's throne. If you don't believe me, listen to "Baby I" which arguably channels some of Carey's older works.
