My home town. Growing up, the only thing I used to think about was getting out of the city. I felt there was nothing there for me. At the time, I didn't realize how beautiful this city was nor did I welcome with open arms all the city had to offer. I do not get to visit much but on this last trip, I fell in love. The city has undergone a breathtaking transformation and this short trip was not long enough for me to soak it all in. There's so much to do and so many places to visit. From its beautiful beaches and lavish hotels to its enticing restaurants and innovative art culture, not to mention family and old friends, I didn't want to leave! Take a look at some of the scenes I was able to capture on film. I do warn you, these pictures do the city no justice.
Strawberry Festival 2014
February 27 - March 9
Once a year, Florida orchestrates an event rich in horticulture, tradition, crafts, and community cohesiveness. This festival dedicated to the harvest of strawberries "represents a piece of Americana" through its celebration and preservation of heritage. As one of the best festivals in the nation, people come together from all over to enjoy scrumptious strawberries, special entertainment, games and mechanical rides. This year, they had acts like Boys 2 Men and Lee Brice. To find out more information, please visit www.flstrawberryfestival.com.
My long time friend and fellow blogger, Jasmine, my niece Samiyah, and I had a blast at the festival. We walked around and ate EVERYTHING. I'm not exaggerating when I say "ate EVERYTHING!" Together we had strawberry cookies, chocolate covered strawberries, a hamburger, a turkey leg, corn dogs, cotton candy, a candy apple, french fries and a strawberry crepe. I think she even tried to get me to eat a donut burger as we discussed fried Oreos and fried bananas. That was a little too far for me and I had to draw the line. We rode a few rides until Jasmine and my niece decided they couldn't stomach the butterflies. They called it quits and I was stuck with 5 tickets left. I kind of coached my niece on how to swindle the cashier into giving us our money back. Lol. I excitedly purchased a jar of pure strawberry preserves but my silly niece left in Jasmine's car. I will probably never see that jar again.
Partaking in this festival reminded me why I love "home" so much. Florida has been my entire life. Now that I have lived in Virginia for the past four years, each visit home is like a "stop and smell the roses" kind of moment. For a quick second, I contemplated moving back.
