Friday | Stars and Stripes
Patriotism for the 4th of July represents everything the nation stands for: life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. It is also an excuse for fashionistas to drape themselves in the stylish combination of blue stars and red and white stripes. I opted for this flag themed hat from Forever 21 to coat my ensemble. Urban Outfitters also had a few flag patterned items such as hats, backpacks, socks, tees and tanks that were super cute.
Whether a sacred emblem to the commitment of our country or a trending fashion statement for the holidays, be careful when wearing American flag themed apparel. Some of you may not know that doing so violates the United States code for the care of the nation's flag.
For Your Knowledge: (found in Title 4, Chapter 1, of the United States Code, which is federal law)
• The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery.
• The flag should never be used for advertising purposes in any manner whatsover.
• It should not be embroidered on such articles as cushions or handkerchiefs and the like, printed or otherwise impressed on paper napkins or boxes or anything that is designed for temporary use and discard.
• The flag should not be used as part of a costume or athletic uniform, except that a flag patch may be used on the uniform of military personnel, firefighters, police officers, and members of patriotic organizations.
It is a good thing we are protected by the constitution's First Amendment's right of freedom of speech or we would all be committing fashion crimes, literally. What do you think about wearing stars and stripes?
