Donald Sterling has been called out for saying various racist statements. An audio recording of an intimate conversation with girlfriend, Vanessa Stiviano, was leaked to TMZ on April 9, 2014. He was heard telling Stiviano to stop coming to the Clippers' games with Black people and to stop taking pictures with Black people. (He was responding to images of her on her Instagram with NBA legend Magic Johnson.) After being asked if he was racist, he stated "no" because he pays "those people" and owns them. After a national conference for the NBA, commissioner Adam Silver came to conclusion of banning Sterling from the NBA for life and fining him 2.5 million dollars.
As heard on the tape:
"I've known (Magic) well and he should be admired. ... I'm just saying that it's too bad you can't admire him privately," the man on the recording says. "Admire him, bring him here, feed him, f**k him, but don't put (Magic) on an Instagram for the world to have to see so they have to call me. And don't bring him to my games."
Can I play devil's advocate for a second here? Based on the above statement ALONE, could Sterling not be referring to race; however, the mere disrespect he feels from Stiviano from bringing another man to his [Sterling] workplace and putting another man's face on her Instagram? What if these statements reflect jealousy and relationship issues they are currently having? And all statements that follow are from a different conversation?
Celebrities all over have been sharing there opinions on this incident. I watched BET's 106 & Park's host Keshia Chante, interview Sterling via telephone live on air. They proceeded to have a casual conversation and Sterling called the host a "moron." She asked him to refrain from using insults. He stated he was done talking to her then hung up the phone. Keshia Chante dismissed the situation as professionally as possible. I personally think he's rude and I'm glad he's banned. I do not deny that he made those statements, as Donald Sterling walks around with the master and slave mentality. He did not deny that was his voice on the recording and he has been in these types of situations in the past. Did you know that in 2005, he paid about $5 million in attorney's fees to settle a lawsuit in which he was charged with trying to drive Korean residents out of his Koreatown apartments in L.A? Do you remember that in 2008, Sterling the Clippers organization was sued by Elgin Baylor who claimed he was wrongfully terminated from his position as team general manager due discrimination of age and race? Let's not mention in 2009, he paid $2.7 million in a Department of Justice settlement in which he was charged with discrimination against blacks, Hispanics, and families with children?
Sterling's girlfriend Vanessa Stiviano said in their recorded conversation, "Do you know that you have a whole team that is black; that plays for you?" He allegedly responds, "I support them and give them food, and clothes, and cars, and houses." What an outrage! At this point, there is no denying any claims of not being a racist. Might I add, Stiviano is said to be of African and Mexican decent. I wonder if he knows that...
The LA Clippers have lost multiple sponsorships due to the incident such as StateFarm, CarMax, and Red Bull. The LA Clippers decided to show their retaliation by staging a silent protest. They removed their warm up jackets, revealing red T-shirts worn inside out to hide their logos. They wanted to make it known that they weren't playing for the team name but playing for themselves. They finished the game in their regular uniforms.
The question remains whether the audio tape was legitimate or altered. I believe with his previous history, he made those statements. Could it be a retaliation ploy from Stiviano because she is allegedly being sued for embezzling $1.8 million dollars from the Sterling family? Maybe, but if the shoe fits, then he's wearing a giant size 17. It's impossible for that shoe to fit anyone but him.
