As you guys know, we have been following the proposed Aaliyah project that Lifetime Network is determined to produce. Wendy Williams announced yesterday that she, along with Debra M. Chase, will executive produce the film and Alexandra Shipp (House of Anubis) will now star as the late R&B singer Aaliyah. I think I'm starting to realize that Hollywood figures have absolutely NO RESPECT. It appears they will do anything for a quick buck and to push their own agenda.
It is not an unknown fact that Aaliyah's family is strongly against the project but you continue to have Hollywood figures jump on board. Not only is that disrespectful to the family, it shows a level disrespect and dishonor to the late singer as it seems people are trying to exploit her life without considering the thoughts and feelings of her family. True Aaliyah fans know Aaliyah was very close to her mother and brother. Without the family's consent, this film is bound to fail at capturing the true essence of who Aaliyah was and what she stood for. Fans started a petition back in June to shut down production on ipetitions.com. If you feel strongly about this, please take a look at it and sign it if you feel inclined to do so.
Lifetime is not producing this film with a good heart. As an Aaliyah fan, I, for one, cannot support a project of this nature, especially if the family is not involved. I will not be watching this charade if it is completed.
For Your Information ...
Lifetime is also producing a Whitney Houstn biopic that will be directed by actress Angela Bassett. It is a trend for Lifetime, but you should have speculated that the family is not involved in this project as well. Bassett has been subjected to harsh backlash from the late icon's daughter Bobbi Kristina, as she was upset that Basset did not consider casting her for the role of her mother. Similar to the Aaliyah film, Lifetime is having difficulty attaining the clearing and rights to Whitney Houston's music. The film will contain Houston's songs but R&B singer Debra Cox, has signed on to lend the vocals. This film will star model turned actress, YaYa Dacosta.
